On Sunday evening, I left work & headed straight for a fairly-local Irish pub to join some friends for some great food, drinks, & gaming. We ended up with 7 people showing up to hang out & play, which was awesome for a super last-minute invitation via Twitter. After grabbing something to eat, we started a couple of games. Daniel, Eric & Megan started a 3-player game of
Cacao while Adam, Linus, Chris and I sunk our teeth into
Kraftwagen.

As mentioned in my recent GenCon post, I had been really interested in
Kraftwagen based upon my love for
Glen More. I'd heard a lot of mixed opinions about the game so was a little wary going in but, in the end, I thoroughly enjoyed the game. It feel different enough from
Glen More to justify having both games available depending on the experience you're looking for at a given time. I enjoyed the various strategies presented & in fact, did different things round to round in order to explore the different options. Surprisingly, this didn't destroy my chances of being competitive &, in fact, I ended up winning but barely, Adam made a mistake at the very end that sabotaged his sales & prevented him taking the win from me.

After
Kraftwagen, some of the group chose to head out leaving just four of us at the pub. We moved to a better lit area, grabbed another round, & set up a game of
La Granja. This was my 3rd play of the game in a couple of weeks & I still really like it. I didn't do nearly as well in this game - I had intended to try a different strategy from my previous plays & ended up stalling out a bit on resources/cards but I still had a lot of fun. I came in 3rd, 10 points behind the leader, but I could see a few points in retrospect where I might have made up the gap. After this game it was close to closing time (and in fact, the staff had already vacuumed the room around us) so we said our goodbyes & headed out into the night.
Games Played: Kraftwagen &
La Granja
